OUR HISTORY

In 1997, the State of California offered substantial matching funds for constructing buildings under joint-use agreements between schools and community organizations. Recognizing this opportunity, the Templeton Unified School District allocated $1 million from local Measure C Bond revenues to a multi-purpose building for the performing arts. Through a lottery, Templeton was fortunate to be selected to receive state funds. However, between the original grant application and finalizing construction contracts, rising costs and a non-competitive bidding environment increased the basic structure's cost to over $2.5 million, however, only $1 million was secured.

Adapting to the situation, the district revised its plan, using the available $2 million to construct the basic structure. An alternative funding approach was pursued to complete the backstage and entry areas, furnish the auditorium with seats, and equip it with proper sound and lighting systems. A committee, led by then Templeton High School Principal Jim Fotinakes, worked to secure additional funds through donations and fundraising activities.

It's crucial to note that the $1 million in state funds was earmarked exclusively for this project, and if the building wasn't constructed at that time, the funds couldn't be redirected. Furthermore, any future progress on the project would require 100% funding from the district.

The vision for the building, mandated by the grant, was to serve as a joint-use facility for both schools and the community. The basic structure was completed in 2003, with a special committee spending subsequent years seeking alternative funding for additional features.

The Templeton Performing Arts Center has since become a cultural hub, hosting world-class performing arts and providing career and vocational/technical education for Templeton Unified School District students. With its intimate 330-seat setting and state-of-the-art facilities, it stands as the sole indoor performing arts center between Salinas and San Luis Obispo.

Over two decades, the Templeton PAC has evolved in line with the grant's vision, becoming an integral part of the community. Recognizing the need for sustained maintenance, upgrades, and expanded utilization, the Templeton Performing Arts Center Foundation has been established. This Foundation aims to provide additional support and funding beyond the district's capacity, promoting performing arts programs, cultural projects, and educational events. It also supports the building's operation to maximize its potential for the performing arts, learning, entertainment, and community-building.

As we embark on this new phase, the Templeton PAC Foundation invites you to join us. Comprising parents, teachers, administrators, business owners, and committed citizens, our board is dedicated to the long-term success of the Templeton PAC. We're just getting started, and we invite you to be a part of our journey!

Vicki van den Eikhof co-founded the Templeton Performing Arts Center Foundation in 2018. Over the course of twelve years, leading teams of volunteers and starting two non-profits, she helped to raise about $500,000 for public school programs--primarily in the performing arts. Vicki passionately believes that every person on this earth is born to be creative. "It is imperative for our survival as well as our personal happiness, that we discover our creative outlets and learn to use them to make the world a better place." When she's not writing agendas, grants, and sending emails, Vicki enjoys directing and singing in choirs and dancing West Coast Swing.
